You have a voice – use it on 9 April 2017

Municipal elections officially take place on Sunday 9 April 2017, and the polls are open from 9 am to 8 pm.

In municipal elections, people can only vote for candidates in their home municipality. Bring an identity card and your voting card to the polling station. The Local Register Office will send a voting card by 16 March 2017 to every person who is eligible to vote and whose address is known.

You can vote prior to the election day between 29 March and 4 April at any early-voting polling station in Finland.

Jyväskylä has a total of 581 candidates from 12 different political parties

City counsellors are selected from among all candidates who receive votes through the proportional representation system. See the list of candidates in Jyväskylä.

You can meet the candidates at the Jyväskylä’s pedestrian street when it turns into election street from Saturday 1 April, to Saturday 8 April. You can also find all candidates and their photos, for example, from City of Jyväskylä's webpages .

Who can vote in municipal elections

Finnish citizens or citizens of another Member State of the European Union as well as of Iceland and Norway who have reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election, and whose municipality of residence is the municipality in question on the 51st day before election day.

Foreigners who have reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election, and whose municipality of residence, is the municipality in question on the 51st day before election day, and who at that time have had a municipality of residence in Finland for an uninterrupted period of two years.

A notice of right to vote will be sent to every person who is eligible to vote

A person entitled to vote in municipal elections will receive a notice of his or her right to vote (card of information) not later than 24 days before election day. The card states i.a. the election day, the days for advance voting, the address of the polling station of the recipient, and the addresses and telephone numbers of the election authorities.

By voting you can influence the decisions on issues that affect your daily life

Municipal elections in Finland are held every fourth year. Municipal elections are held to elect the councillors of the municipalities. By voting in municipal elections you can influence the decisions on issues that affect your daily life such as health care, youth facilities, child day care, libraries, school meals, local traffic and elderly care.

The City Council of Jyväskylä, which will start its term on 1 June 2017, will have 67 members. The City Council makes decisions on Jyväskylä's activities and finances, as well as the provision of municipal services. The City Council is the highest decision-making body, and it is authorised by people living in Jyväskylä.

In the previous municipal elections in 2012, the voter turnout was 58.3 per cent in Finland overall, and 55.1 per cent in Jyväskylä, a fall from the previous elections.

City of Jyväskylä is responsible for the practical arrangements for the municipal elections in the city. In addition to early voting and voting on the actual election day, City of Jyväskylä will also make voting possible at home and in institutions. Registrations for home voting must be made before 4 pm on 28 March 2017. Further information is available from the telephone number below or from Jyväskylä's webpages. The municipal election is organised by number of people in Jyväskylä, representing for instance municipal associations (political parties).

Results on 12 April 2017

The votes will be recounted on 10 April 2017, and the central election board of Jyväskylä will confirm and issue the results on 12 April 2017.
