City of Jyväskylä

Mayor Markku Andersson

It’s my great pleasure to welcome you to the City of Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä is one of the most popular places in Finland to move to

Jyvaskylä’s reputation as a city of education is well known and respected. The University of Jyväskylä is very familiar to me since I have both studied and worked there. My previous positions in local government include a spell as mayor of Lappeenranta in southeast Finland.

Culture, physical recreation and nature are vital to our everyday well-being as citizens of Jyväskylä

I am very keen on sport. I play bandy on a weekly basis and regularly attend the games of Jyväskylä’s highly successful ice hockey team JYP, which plays in Finland’s top professional league.

I can warmly recommend participation in Jyväskylä’s numerous sporting and cultural events. Major events in Jyväskylä include Neste Oil Rally Finland - the Finnish round of the World Rally Championship - and Jyväskylä Arts Festival, which lays on a diverse cultural programme that includes non-verbal theatre, concerts and happenings for the whole family. In summer the city’s busy pedestrian precinct becomes the venue for performances amateur and professional.

City of Light

Jyväskylä is the City of Light and Finland’s top city in terms of imaginative urban illumination. By investing in the city’s lighting solutions not only have we succeeded in creating an environment that is safe and enjoyable to live and work in but also achieved significant energy and cost savings.

City of architect Alvar Aalto

Jyväskylä is perhaps best known for the world-famous architect Alvar Aalto. Jyväskylä is the venue for several international gatherings connected with architecture, such as the Alvar Aalto Symposium and the Alvar Aalto Design Seminar. International architecture competitions as well as students of architecture have significantly enhanced the city’s appeal.

In the next few years Jyväskylä will host a whole range of interesting events and projects

A number of interesting projects are going on in Jyväskylä. For instance, Jyväskylä represents the cybersecurity theme in Innovative Cities (INKA) programme launched by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy .

Furthermore, City of Jyväskylä and Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra have launched a project called Resource wisdom aimed at promoting more efficient and relevant use of resources, improving the regional economy and reducing the environmental impacts of operations. The project will consist of a number of interesting experiments and pilot operations.
