The new local library in Kuokkala, Jyväskylä, is now open

The new library in Kuokkala was opened at Liitukuja 4 on Monday 27 August. The library is located in the new L section of the Kuokkala Comprehensive School. The library adds to the services of the Kuokkala region of 8,000 residents (population estimate in December 2017) and provides a highly valued service.

“We emphasize topicality and freshness in the collection of the Kuokkala local library. Our selection of materials include not only children’s, adolescents’ and adults’ books but also newspapers and magazines, CD disks, audio books, sheet music, e-books, e-magazines and e-audio books as well as various games. Customers can also book the materials free of charge at any Central Library and collect them from us,” says Mielikki Matilainen, Director of the Kuokkala Local Library.

The library’s opening hours are from Monday to Tuesday from 13.00 to 19.00 and from Wednesday to Friday from 11.00 to 16.00. The Kuokkala Library will also operate as a self-service library, a service which will be available in the autumn on a date yet to be notified to the library users. When the self-service library is in use, adult customers may visit it every day from 8:00 to 21.00. To access the self-service library, you will need your own library card and a PIN code.

Transforming the library into a living room for Kuokkala residents

In addition to borrowing materials, you can work remotely, study and participate in events at the Kuokkala library. The autumn season 2018 will witness the start of book tips, courses on how to use the library for schoolchildren, story hours for children accompanied by their par-ents, book nights and computer tutoring. The story hours will be held on Thursdays at 9.30 on 13 September, 27 September, 11 October, 25 October, 8 November and 22 November. The tutors of the University of the Third Age will instruct attendees on the use of computers and smart devices on Wednesday mornings from 10.00 to 11.30. The tutoring sessions will begin on 12 September.

The opening of the Kuokkala local library will also affect the mobile library stops. The Wivi library bus stops in the Kuokkala centre and near the comprehensive school as well as in Kekkola have been closed. However, there is a new Wivi stop in Äijälä at Äijäläntie 33 where the library bus can be accessed on Mondays from 18.20 to 18.50.

Jyväskylä’s first mini library was located in Kuokkala between 2008-2014. The library was located under the same roof as the youth services and the joint community service point (now a housing access point) near the Kuokkala Commercial Centre.
