Jyväskylä celebrates Finland’s centenary on 5 and 6 December 2017

The centenary of Finland’s independence will culminate on Independence Day. The City of Jyväskylä, the Jyväskylä Evangelical Lutheran Parish and the Jyväskylä Garrison are organising public events with free admission.

On Tuesday 5 December 2017 at 6 p.m., the Finnish flag will be raised on the illuminated pole in Paraatiaukio square in Kirkkopuisto park. It will be flown until 10 p.m. on 6 December, in line with the centenary guidelines. At the event, the welcoming address will be given by Mayor Timo Koivisto, and the Kolmekuutoset children’s choir will perform.

At the same time, at 6 p.m. on 5 December, the Ylistö Bridge will be lit up in blue and white, and the work of art in Kompassiranta by Jyväsjärvi lake will be illuminated in blue. The special lighting will stay on at these sites until midnight on 6 December.

On Independence Day, Wednesday 6 December 2017 at 10 a.m., a celebratory service will be held at Taulumäki Church, Lohikoskentie 2. The Veterans’ Choir and the Sirkat men’s choir will perform.

After the service, at 11.30 p.m., wreaths will be laid on the war graves at the Old Cemetery on Puistokatu while guards of honour stand by. The Jyväskylä Brass Band and the Veterans’ Choir will perform at the event. A wreath will be laid by the City of Jyväskylä, the Jyväskylä City Parish and the Jyväskylä Orthodox Parish, and by the Jyväksylä Garrison. In addition, the City of Jyväskylä will lay wreaths at the memorials of those who died for their convictions and those who died in Karelia.

On Independence Day, we will pay remembrance to the people who safeguarded our independ-ence. A guard of honour of 66 people will be formed at the war graves at the Jyväksylä Old Cem-etery, with each person standing by each grave being of the same age as the deceased. The guard of honour will be formed in the middle section of the war cemetery on 6 December at 11.15 a.m. for the duration of the event, which will be about 30 minutes. Participants have been invited to join the guard of honour, for example, from educational institutions.

A public celebration of Independence Day will be held in Paviljonki, Lutakonaukio 12, on 6 December at 1 p.m. The P-Paviljonki 1 and 2 car parks have been reserved for the event. Large decorations and honours will be worn. The event will start with coffee at 11:30 a.m. The main speaker will be Keijo Hämäläinen, Rector of the University of Jyväskylä. Addresses will be given by Meri Lumela, Chair of the City Board, Colonel Pekka Airaksinen and vicar Arto Viitala. Jyväskylä Sinfonia, with Waltteri Torikka, and the Vox Aurea choir will perform.

To celebrate the special day, the number 100 will be created on Lutakko Square. Locals are asked to bring candles and place them in the spots outlined on Lutakko Square between 5 and 7 p.m. The candles can be of any size and colour, as long as the flame is protected from the wind. The number 100 will be formed by these candles. It will stay lit until 9 p.m.

On 6 December at 6 p.m., the traditional torchlight procession will start in front of the main uni-versity building and move towards the Old Cemetery, where a wreath will be placed on the war memorial at 6.30 p.m. The procession will be organised by first-year students of the University of Jyväskylä’s teacher training department.

As usual, the Harju steps will be illuminated from 6 to 8 p.m. on Independence Day. This will be organised by Jyväskylän Partiolaiset and Reippaat Pojat, two local groups of the Guides and Scouts of Finland.

As usual, residents are asked to light candles or other special lighting in their homes from 6 to 8 p.m.

We warmly welcome everyone to celebrate Finland’s 100th birthday!
